America’s educational system is losing its competitive edge. Among industrialized countries, American students scored below average in math and are falling behind in science and reading as well.8 Kids in the United States lag behind Russia; in fact, they’re placed right between the Slovak Republic and Lithuania in rankings by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Program for International Student Assessment. We need to make American education more competitive internationally . . . but how? Increased competition among schools here at home might work. More than half of the states in the union have tried out some kind of school voucher program, in which families receive a tax-subsidized voucher that allows them to choose the best school for their kids. Families get the freedom to choose among public and private schools. Schools compete with one another for students, which improves standards across the board. It’s a no-brainer. But President Obama and his Education secretary, Arne Duncan, have criticized the school choice movement and obstructed the voucher program in the only place where the federal government has direct jurisdiction over education: Washington, D.C.

Obama and his cronies in the teachers’ unions think taxpayer-funded vouchers are okay when it comes to purchasing private insurance on Obamacare exchanges, but not when it comes to picking a school for their kids.9 If these teachers’ unions cared as much about the kids who fall through the cracks of our failing public education system as they did about protecting their job security, they’d stop trying to thwart school choice.
